History of Zagreb

Zagreb is the capital and the largest city of Croatia. It is located in the northwest of the country, along the Sava river, at the southern slopes of the Medvednica mountain. Zagreb is a city with a rich history dating back to the 11th century. The first written mention of the city dates back to 1094. when it was mentioned as a small trading settlement. In 1242., Zagreb was proclaimed a free royal borough by King Béla IV of Hungary. Zagreb continued to grow and prosper under the rule of the Croatian-Hungarian kings. In 1918., Zagreb became the capital of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia, a constituent kingdom of the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs. After the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1991., Zagreb once again became the capital of Croatia. Today, it is a thriving metropolis with a rich history and culture.
