Lovran

Lovran is the oldest settlement of Liburnia, an ancient region on the northern Adriatic coast. According to the legend, the town was created when the Roman patrician and statesman Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa built his summer residence on the site in the first century AD. By the early Middle Ages it was an important urban and shipbuilding center of northern Adriatic.

Located on the easternmost edge of the Istrian peninsula, on the slopes of Učka mountain, Lovran is close to Opatija with which it’s connected by the lovely Lungomare coastal promenade. With lavish vegetation and surrounding views of the breathtaking Kvarner Bay, Lovran has been a sought-after tourist destination since the turn of the 19th century, which is evident from the eye-candy villas that date back to the time. Today, Lovran is a health tourism hotspot with rich history and tradition.

Tourism in Lovran:

Town Lovran is located beneath the mountain Učka and was named after plant laurel (‘lovor’ in Croatian language). You will find Lovran only 5km from Opatija on the east coast of Istrian peninsula. It is a small town that has limited options to expand duo to very specific territory around it. Therefore the hotels are few but they are all excellent. Best hotels in town are Smart Selection hotel Excelsior and Hotel Park, two four-star beauties located in green areas close to the sea. Both of them are very similar when it comes to the services they offer, but are very different in size. Hotel Park is smaller, a great pick for everyone who are looking for more quiet holidays. Hotel Lovran and hotel Bristol are three-star hotels with central location close to the sea.

Bit more south from Lovran is a small sea side village called Mošćenička Draga. There you find the gorgeous Remisens hotel Marina. It offers a half board, full board and even all-inclusive service during certain time of the year. Few kilometers more south you will stumble upon another village called Medveja which is home to Holiday resort Medveja that is split into two sections: Holiday resort Medveja(apartments and mobile homes) and Holiday resort Medveja(hotel-type rooms).

History and culture of Lovran:

The first building with tourism purpose, Villa Fernandea (today annex of Belvedere hotel), was built in 1873. between Lovran and Ika, there are plenty of lavish villas built in Gothic and Venetian style.
