History & Culture – What to visit?
The Euphrasian Basilica, the episcopal complex, including, apart from the basilica itself, a sacristy, a baptistery, and the bell tower of the nearby archbishop's palace, is one of the best examples of early Byzantine architecture in the Mediterranean region. Because of its exceptional value, it has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997. The Basilica is also the Cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Poreč-Pula.
By entering into the Historic Core of Poreč, you have stepped onto an over 2000-year-old stage. The 400 m long and 200 m wide peninsula was divided by ancient surveyors into insulas, plots of land allocated to housing, public institutions, temples, and intertwined in a regular street network. The major part of this grid plan has been preserved along with the ancient names of its longest parallel and perpendicular Decumanus and Cardo Maximus streets with Marafor Square.
The Museum of the Poreč Territory is the heir of two previously established museums: the Regional Archeological museum of Istria, founded in 1884, and the City Museum for Arts and History, founded in 1926. The collections of both museums are incorporated in today's museum, located in the baroque palace of the Sinčić family since 1952. The Museum takes care of several buildings, cultural and historical areas in Poreč and its surroundings.
