History of Poreč

Poreč was first settled by the Romans who built a colony here in the 1st century AD. The city then became part of the Byzantine Empire before being taken over by the Venetians in the 13th century. Poreč was an important city for the Venetians as it was located on the trade route between Venice and Asia. The city flourished under Venetian rule and many of its buildings were constructed during this time. The Venetians held onto Poreč until the 18th century when it was taken by the Austrians.
