History and culture:

Tumultuous history leaves its trace in the everyday life of the city that always moved steadily forward, remaining the center of this part of the coast to this day. Great city beats today with the silent whisper of history, the lively spirit of youth and charm of the Mediterranean yet in every way also Croatian warmth...

Diocletian Palace -  named after its creator, the Roman Emperor Gaius Aurelius Valerius Diocletian. It is one of the best preserved monuments of Roman architecture in the world. The Emperor's Palace was built as a combination of a luxury villa - a summer house and a Roman military camp (castrum), divided into four parts with two main streets.

Cathedral of St.Dominus (St.Duje –local) - Among the European cathedrals one of the Split finds nestles in the oldest building - the Mausoleum of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Inside the cathedral, at the end of the second millennium, the history reconciles ancient pagan, Medieval Christian and modern heritage. Mausoleum of the Emperor – last persecutor of Christians become a cathedral in the 7th century where altars with relics of St Domnius and St Anastasius, martyrs executed in the nearby Solin, take an honorary place.

The Bell Tower of the Cathedral (57m high)  - is the most original Dalmatian Medieval architecture built in the 13th century. The bell tower was thoroughly reconstructed and somewhat altered at the turn of the 20th century. Today you can climb the steps all the way to the top of the bell tower, where a spectacular view of the entire Split awaits you.

Peristyle -  the central square of the Palace, built with several temples around the same place. The Emperor was celebrated as the living son of Jupiter, who used to appear under the architrave of the central part of Protyron, and the vassals used to fall on the knees, kissing his scarlet cloak. The red color of the granite columns emphasizes the ceremonial function and from that time, the purple color became the imperial color.

The Diocletian Palace Cellars represent one of the best preserved ancient complexes of that kind in the world. The floor plan showcases a mirror image of the emperor’s residence above as this substructure acted as supporting walls. The basement halls were the entranceway into the palace by sea via the Brass Gate and previously, when the sea reached the very walls of the palace, boats would be able to berth in front of the gate to drop off supplies or receive noble guests

Temple of Jupiter  - considered as one of the most beautiful European monuments. Rectangular in its floor plan the temple served to celebrate Jupiter's cult. It lies on an elevated podium, with a six-column porch in front of it. Embossed images on the portal, as well as the barrel offered vault influenced the early Renaissance architecture of Andrija Alessi and Nikola Firentinac in Trogir.
